    Raritan Bayshore Port City

Townhouses & Duplexes in Perth Amboy, NJ

Welcome to Perth Amboy, a historic Middlesex County port city at the mouth of the Raritan River, where a revitalized waterfront meets one of New Jersey's oldest colonial settlements.

Perth Amboy is a city in northeastern Middlesex County, New Jersey, positioned where the Raritan River meets Raritan Bay at the Arthur Kill. It lies within the New York metropolitan area, directly across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island, and is part of the Raritan Bayshore region of northern New Jersey. The city has one of the longest recorded histories of any settlement in the state. Settled in the late seventeenth century, it served as the capital of the East Jersey colony from 1686 to 1702 and later alternated with Burlington as a provincial capital before Trenton took on that role. That colonial-era prominence left the city with a deep inventory of historic architecture and a waterfront that has long defined its identity. During the nineteenth century the city industrialized, and by the mid-1800s it had developed into a working port and manufacturing center. By the twentieth century Perth Amboy had also become known as a resort community along the Raritan Bayshore, though its economy later diversified. Beginning in the 1990s the city's waterfront underwent significant revitalization, and today a promenade, marina, and restored landmarks frame views of Raritan Bay and Staten Island. The city's population of roughly 55,000 is predominantly Hispanic, reflecting decades of Puerto Rican and Dominican settlement as well as newer arrivals. Perth Amboy functions as a dense, transit-connected urban community with a mix of older single-family and multifamily housing. Its location on the North Jersey Coast Line and near the Outerbridge Crossing keeps it tied to both central New Jersey employment centers and New York City, while its bayside setting and historic core give it a distinct sense of place among Middlesex County's municipalities.
