Neptune Township is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, on the Jersey Shore. Long known as the Crossroads of the Jersey Shore, it sits where several major roadways converge along the coast, and it borders Asbury Park, Bradley Beach, Belmar, Avon-by-the-Sea, Neptune City, Ocean Township, Tinton Falls, and Wall Township. Its population is roughly 28,000. The township is remarkable for its internal diversity. On the Atlantic lies Ocean Grove, a seaside community founded in 1869 as a Methodist camp meeting and now a State and National Historic District known for its Victorian architecture, the Great Auditorium, and its seasonal Tent City. Farther south, Shark River Hills is a riverside residential neighborhood built along the Shark River, while Mid-Town, Bradley Park, the Gables, Seaview Island, and West Neptune make up the township's inland, more conventionally suburban sections. Public school students attend the Neptune Township School District, a comprehensive pre-K through 12th grade system serving the township. Transportation is a defining asset: the Garden State Parkway runs west of the township with access at exits 100 and 102, Routes 18, 33, and 35 carry local traffic, and NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line stops at the nearby Bradley Beach station, connecting residents to the broader Shore region and, with a transfer, to New York. The township's mix of oceanfront history, riverside living, and inland suburbia gives it a breadth rare among Jersey Shore municipalities. Residents can walk the Victorian boardwalk in Ocean Grove, boat on the Shark River, or reach the restaurants and entertainment of Asbury Park within minutes, all while living in a community with its own school system, parks, and local services.
