Monroe Township occupies the southern tier of Middlesex County, where the Raritan Valley begins to give way to the open farmland and orchards of central New Jersey. It is the largest municipality in the county by land area, covering roughly 42 square miles, and functions as an outer-ring suburb of New York City. Incorporated in 1838, the township remained largely rural for more than a century before highway construction transformed its character in the post-war decades.
