Jackson is a township in Ocean County, New Jersey, located in the central part of the state within the New Jersey Pinelands, roughly midway between New York City and Philadelphia. It is one of the largest townships by area in the county, and much of its land is preserved or semi-rural, giving it a wooded, spread-out character that contrasts with the denser communities of northern and central New Jersey. A portion of the township falls within the Pinelands National Reserve, the million-acre protected region that covers much of southern New Jersey, and that designation shapes land use and development across Jackson. The township is best known nationally as the home of Six Flags Great Adventure. The park opened on July 1, 1974, conceived by showman Warner LeRoy as a sprawling entertainment complex, and it has grown into a 510-acre resort that includes the main theme park, the Wild Safari drive-through animal park, and the seasonal Hurricane Harbor water park. The resort is both a major regional destination and a significant local presence, drawing millions of seasonal visitors and anchoring part of Jackson's economy and identity. Beyond the park, Jackson is largely a residential township with a mix of suburban subdivisions, older homes, and larger wooded and farm properties. It grew substantially through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as families sought more space than older Shore suburbs offered, while remaining within commuting distance of the Jersey Shore and, with longer drives, New York and Philadelphia. Interstate 195 runs through the township, linking it to the New Jersey Turnpike and the Shore. Jackson suits households drawn to a semi-rural central Jersey setting with room to breathe, proximity to the Shore, and a nationally known amusement destination in their backyard — while accepting a car-dependent lifestyle and longer commutes to the region's urban employment centers.
