Denville is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, about 35 miles west of Manhattan. The 2020 census counted 17,107 residents. Incorporated in 1913, the township grew from a crossroads settlement along the Den Brook into a railroad and lake community, and today functions as a commuter town with a strong local identity. Water defines Denville. The township contains a remarkable concentration of lakes — Indian Lake, Cedar Lake, Rock Ridge, Lake Estling, Lake Arrowhead, and Openaka Lake among them — many of which began as summer cottage and lakeside communities in the early 1900s. Speculators marketed Cedar Lake Park in 1907, and Rock Ridge was laid out the same year, setting a pattern of lakefront neighborhoods that still shapes the township. Beach clubs, boating, and lakeside recreation remain central to daily life. Denville's downtown runs along Broadway and Diamond Spring Road, with restaurants, cafes, and shops that draw residents from across the township's neighborhoods. The Denville train station is an important junction: NJ Transit's Morristown Line and Montclair-Boonton Line meet there, with Midtown Direct trains reaching New York Penn Station in roughly 75 minutes. Education is provided by the Denville Township School District for kindergarten through eighth grade, followed by Morris Knolls High School in the Morris Hills Regional High School District, which Denville shares with neighboring Rockaway Township. Route 46, Route 10, and Route 53, plus nearby Interstate 80, provide road access across Morris County and toward New York. The township's mix of historic lake cottages, expanded mid-century homes, and newer construction gives it housing variety within a small area.
